Some Interesting Places

paroRimpong Dzong or the fortress at Paro, controls all the secular and religious activities in the valley. It was built during the time of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in 1646. Beside Paro Dzong, on the high hillside, is the Ta Dzong (Bhutan’s National Museum since 1968) which has served as a watchtower during the time of war to guard the Dzong from the external invasion. The ruins of Drugyal Dzong at the northern end of the valley, offer a view of Mt. Jumolhari on a clear day. It was built to commemorate the victory over Tibetan invasion in the 17th century. Other places of interest in Paro are temples like Kyichu Lhakang and Dungtse Lhakang.

THIMPHU : ThimphuThe modern capital of Bhutan since 1955 and lies at an altitude of about 7600 feet. Tashichhodzong, on the bank of the Wang Chu, was build in 1641. It houses the throne room of His Majesty the King of Bhutan, national’s largest monastery and headquarters of His Holiness the Je Khanpo (Head of the Monastic Body). It is open to visitors during festival time. Other places of interest in Thimphu are Institute of Zorig Chosum,- Students learn traditional paintings and also making of sculpture and statues. Handicraft Emporium where you can buy hand woven and crafted products, National Institute of Traditional Medicine, Weekend Market, Bhutan’s National Library, Changangkha Lhakangand and Simtokha Dzong which is 6 km away from the town.

PunakhaPUNAKHA : Old capital of the Kingdom is blessed with temperate climate almost all year round. Punakha dzong, at the confluence of the Pho (male) and Mo (female) rivers, served as the winter capital until 1955, and is today the winter home for the monastic community. The dzong was built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1637.

TrongsaTrongsa is in the center of Bhutan. It is the ancestral seat of the royal family. The first and the second king ruled the country from this ancient seat. The dzong was built in 1648 and is a massive structure with many levels, which slope down the contours of a hill on which it perches.

bumthangThe four valleys that make Bumthang is the sacred heart of the country. Besides natural beauty, the valley is bountifully blessed with numerous ancient temples and is the revered birthplace of many saints. It was here that the legendary saint Pema Lingpa was born, to whom the Bhutanese Royalties trace their lineage. Bumthang is also distinguished in history as the first place in Bhutan where Guru Rimpoche brought Buddhism.

Jambey Lhakhang
This is the other temple built by Tibetan King, Songtsen Gampo. It was here that Guru Rimpoche conducted the first sermon on Tantric Buddhism for his host King Sendha, the local ruler, his family and subjects. The alcove above the entrance to the inner temple where Guru Rimpoche sat during the sermon can be still seen to this day.

KurjeyLhakhang
KurjeyLhakhangThis Temple located north of the valley above Jambey Lhakhang. It consists of three temples. The one on the right was built in 1652 on the rock face where Guru meditated in the 8th century. The second temple was built in 1900 by the first king when he was still the governor of Trongsa. The third temple was built in 1990 by Ashi Kesang, the Queen Mother. A wall of 108 chortens surrounds the entire complex.

Tamshing Lhakhang
Located in a village across the river from Kurjey Lhakhang is the seat of Bumthang's famous saint-son Pema Lingpa. There is also a chain mail made by Pema Lingpa that devotees carry and circumambulate the inner sanctum. He is also revered as the incarnation of Guru Rimpoche himself.

Jakar Dzong
Founded by the great-grandfather of the first Shabdrung, the Dzong was initially a small hermitage in 1549. It was expanded after the Shabdrung established his power in 1646. The Dzong is now the seat of district administration and monastic body of Bumthang valleys.
